CASTING FOR RECOVERY INC
Mission Statement
The mission of Casting for Recovery is to enhance the lives of women with breast cancer by connecting them to each other and nature through the therapeutic sport of fly fishing.. At no cost to participants, each of our 2.5-day retreats provides medical, psychosocial, and emotional support services and a new community to help women address challenges following a breast cancer diagnosis, as well as a new outlet, fly fishing, as a reprieve from the everyday stresses of cancer. Since our inception, Casting for Recovery has offered more than 800 retreats nationwide for over 12,500 women of all breast cancer stages. In addition to offering traditional retreats (open to women of all ages, ethnicities, insurance statuses, and stages of treatment or recovery), we tailor our retreats to meet the needs of specific groups of women with breast cancer, each of whom has unique needs related to the disease: - Low-income women, who often face challenges in accessing care due to lack of insurance or underinsurance; - African American women, whose breast cancer mortality rate is 40% higher than that of their Caucasian peers; - Native American women, among whom breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed form of cancer and the leading cause of cancer mortality; - Spanish-speaking women, for whom access to bilingual resources and care is essential to improving their breast cancer outcomes; - Women with metastatic breast cancer, the most advanced form of the disease; and - Disabled women veterans and active duty servicewomen (the subject of this application), who are 20—40% more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer than their civilian peers, and often face additional health challenges due to post-traumatic stress disorder, military sexual trauma, and other physical and mental health issues.
