CATHOLIC CHARITABLE BUREAU OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF BOSTON INC
Mission Statement
The Youth Tutoring Youth program was created in 1992 to address the needs of South Boston children in grades three through six who are at risk of underachievement or failure. The program aims to provide tutoring to students in mathematics and the language arts, to promote cultural enrichment, to provide work experience for teens to help them develop marketable skills, and to nurture the development of a mentor-mentee relationship between tutors and their students. Youth Tutoring Youth is a neighborhood-based program that delivers direct educational services to children and teens, enhancing their development, life skills and ability to contribute to the revitalization of their community. The Youth Tutoring Youth (YTY) Program has six goals. 1.To provide a healthy and safe after-school environment. 2.To promote behaviors supporting academic success and achievement by providing remedial assistance in mathematics and language arts to students in grades three through six. 3.To promote reading as a leisurely, relaxing activity to be enjoyed outside of the school setting. 4.To incorporate activities focused on positive lifestyle choices, substance abuse education and prevention. 5.To provide the setting and the climate for a positive “thinking” work experience for teens. 6.To foster the development of a role model, big brother/big sister relationship between the tutors and their students, promoting self-esteem and resiliency in both groups.
