Mission Statement

The Brotherhood/Sister Sol (Bro/Sis) is a social justice organization that since 1995 has been committed to working to respond to inequality, to train young people to become empowered as social change agents, and to work to expand a vision of equity, racial and economic justice - opportunity and access for all. Bro/Sis is a broadly reaching not-for-profit organization dedicated to developing youth into empowered critical thinkers and community leaders. Our "Theory of Change" is to provide multilayered support, guidance, education and love to our membership; to teach them to have self-discipline and form a love of learning; and to offer opportunities and access so they may develop agency. Bro/Sis provides comprehensive, holistic and long-term support services to youth who range in age from eight to twenty-two. The organization focuses on issues such as leadership development and educational achievement, sexual responsibility, sexism and misogyny, political education and social justice, Pan-African and Latinx history, and global awareness. Bro/Sis provides four-six year rites of passage programming, thorough five day a week after school care, school and home counseling, summer camps, job training and employment, college preparation, community organizing training, and international study programs to Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Bro/Sis was founded to address the dire need for supportive programs for Black and Latinx youth who are surrounded by the poverty, drugs, violence, racism, unemployment and substandard education which plague low-income communities in New York City. We provide these youth with the support, guidance, knowledge and resources necessary to understand and overcome these negative pressures. As adolescence is fraught with myriad emotional and physical challenges, we work with students over the course of many years in order to provide a consistent, stabilizing influence in their lives when they most need it.
