FRIENDS AND FAMILY OF PS 11

Dear Friend of PS 11, My name is Anna and my boys attend PS 11, your local elementary school serving over 900 students (ages 4-12) and their families. Our biggest fundraiser of the year is our annual Spring Auction & Gala, which will be held on May 13, 2019, and raises much needed funds for basic student needs and enrichment programs not supported by the Department of Education’s shrinking budget. PS 11 is a dynamic school with classes ranging from special needs and integrated learning to gifted and talented programs that brings students from all over the city. This year we have joined a select group of schools to participate in a pilot initiative to increase diversity in admissions. 30% of our Kindergarten and 1st grade spots have been reserved for children living in temporary housing, homeless shelters or who qualify for free/reduced lunch. We are happy to say that we have easily filled our gifted and talented seats under this initiative and have welcomed many new students to the school. This is pushing us more than ever before to raise funds and focus on free community events and support for all. It is our mission to make sure that each child feels like an equal part of the community and that each child is provided with exceptional experiences above and beyond the basic classroom lessons. One way that we do this is by having the PTA spend approximately $900 yearly on each student each year to cover the costs of school supplies. This alleviates the burden on families that cannot afford the basics and gives all children a strong sense of community. Our incredible PTA also provides 100% of the funds for specialty teachers (music, theater, science, dance and chess), building improvements and our beloved chicken coup and garden that supply our farm-to-table program. As you can imagine, these events and specialties are what the kids most look forward to everyday. We cannot provide these programs without your help!
