Mission Statement

Horses & Heroes Inc. (H&H) is a dedicated non-profit organization, originating in Kansas in 2014, and recognized as a 501(c)(3). Our primary objective is to uphold the mental health and welfare of veterans, first responders, and their families via Ground-Based Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP). Our organization's founder, Julie Baker, a former military spouse, understands the distinctive challenges of military families and has combined her experiences in rescuing traumatized horses with her entrepreneurial prowess and neuroscience education. Our program distinguishes itself by focusing not on horsemanship, but on therapies tailored to address unresolved traumatic experiences. EAP has been recognized in recent research as a potent therapy, yielding results on par with conventional methods while minimizing the stigma often associated with seeking assistance. Our therapeutic approach unfolds in a tranquil outdoor setting that fosters connection and nervous system balance. We strive to incorporate key elements identified by researchers to facilitate effective and enduring healing. The horses' traumatic backgrounds serve as potent metaphors and symbols of hope. Like humans, horses who have endured trauma need emotional safety, physical security, and trust, and each will respond to these needs in their own time.
