EQUAL JUSTICE INITIATIVE
Mission Statement
The Equal Justice Initiative is committed to ending mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the United States, to challenging racial and economic injustice, and to protecting basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society. For almost thirty years, EJI has provided legal representation to the poor, the condemned, the disfavored, children prosecuted as adults, the physically disabled, people with mental illness, and others marginalized by our criminal justice system. EJI also seeks to engage in a meaningful truth and reconciliation process about this country’s legacy of racial injustice. Using research, reports, community education efforts, advocacy and public markers, we want this nation to honestly examine the historical injustices of slavery, racial terror lynching and segregation, and to confront their impact on contemporary issues such as over-policing, police brutality and mass incarceration.
