HAWAIIAN HUMANE SOCIETY
Mission Statement
The Hawaiian Humane Society’s mission is a joyful one full of both challenges and opportunities: to promote the human-animal bond and the humane treatment of all animals. The Hawaiian Humane Society is one of the nation’s oldest humane organizations (organized in 1883) and is Hawaii’s second oldest charity. The founding members raised public awareness about the humane treatment of animals; at a time when animal information was very basic, education was a top priority. While modern-day humane societies are known for sheltering homeless pets, in the early 1900s the Hawaiian Humane Society also cared for children, unwed mothers and others considered to be society's most vulnerable. The vision of those early pioneers guides the Society's efforts today. The Society is still very much a people business. Our busy shelter has grown into a community hub for animal lovers and features several services and programs for our community, including the following: - animal protection: investigation and rescue - animal adoptions - reuniting lost pets with owners - foster care program (nearly 150 animals are in foster care at any given time for a variety of reasons including pre-adoption care, housing due to space issues, pets of active duty military during deployment, and owned animals whose families are in crises.) - curving the pet overpopulation through onsite sterilizations and administration of the City & County’s Neuter Now Program at no cost - micro-chipping and dog licensing - youth and community education programs - volunteer program - animal port at the airport for pet layovers - owner requested euthanasia and private cremation - pet food bank - pet loss support group - pet-friendly housing resources - pet hiking groups - pet visits to seniors and health facilities - humane cat traps available for purchase or loan - animal advocacy The Hawaiian Humane Society is the only open-admission shelter on the island of Oahu. We care for more than 20,000 animals a year because we believe there must be a place where all animals are welcome. The public can bring animals to the Society’s admissions center 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. In the 2015 fiscal year alone, we welcomed 65 animals every day, as well as, reunited 2,396 lost pets with owners, adopted out 7,453 animals, visited 13,459 patients through the pet visitation program, and had 6,704 volunteers contribute 111,273 total hours.
